Austin is a city in Texas famously known for its rib joints, that leave all visitors dreaming about barbecued food. The most famous joint though must be Stubb’s. While their two restaurant/venue locations in Austin serve up some mean pulled pork, it’s their sauce that has made them a household name across the South of the States.

The barbecue sauce company, which like Stubb’s the venue and restaurant, is named after the late C.B. Stubblefield, makes finger-licking barbecue sauces and marinades. Fifty years ago, after feeding thousands as a mess sergeant during the Korean War, C.B. Stubblefield, known simply as “Stubb”, opened his own Bar-B-Q joint in Lubbock, Texas. The ramshackle building soon turned into a hangout for local and touring country and blues legends who would stop by to play for a plate of their favourite barbecue. The tiny restaurant could only fit 75 patrons, but each night Stubb filled the venue for barbecue and blues (or rock or country), feeding patrons and hosting rising music stars like Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters, and Johnny Cash.

When Stubb later moved to Austin, he was urged by friends and patrons to sell his signature sauce. While the bottling methods have changed (he used to sell his sauce in whiskey bottles with a chilli as a stopper), Stubb’s belief in legendary ingredients, hard work and careful craftsmanship remains the backbone of the company that proudly bears his name.
